While it may have cemented its role in modern time, vaping isn’t exactly a new trend.
In fact, vaping was first documented in the history of Ancient Egypt, where hot stones were used to vape herbs. Years later, the shisha was introduced in India. However, the techniques and equipment that are used for vaping now came much later.
Here, we take a look at that part of history.
The first person to come up with the idea of an e-cig was Joseph Robinson in 1927. But it was Herbert Gilbert in 1963 whocreated the actual device. Presenting the smokeless non-tobacco cigarette, Gilbert created a device for vaping in a time when almost everyone smoked, everywhere. As a result, Gilbert’s invention wasn’t ever commercialised.
The commercialisation happened about forty years later in 2003 when a Chinese pharmacist named Hon Lik created an e-cig of his own and presented it to the healthcare and pharmaceutical company he worked for. Golden Dragon Holdings, nowDragoniteInternational Limited then commercialised the concept and made e-cigs common.
The first e-cigs started appearing in the US in 2007 and became popular very fast. During this time, two entrepreneurs from the UK, Tariq and Umer sheikh invented the cartomizer, which made the e-cig much easier to use. In comparison to the three-step mechanism, the cartomizer combined the cartridge and the atomiser and got rid of the bulky design altogether.
This improvement to the device launched the new cigalikes that we see today.
Of course, such a major turn for smokers didn’t go unnoticed for tobacco companies. With the growing popularity of electronic cigarettes overtaking that of traditional cigarettes, many companies decided to dive into the market themselves.
Companies such as Lorillard Inc and Altria Group acquired popular e-cig brands and began to market their own brands of e-cig.
The popularity of vaping has raised many questions about its safety in comparison to smoking cigarettes and the results so far have been positive.
In fact, the Department of Health in the UK released a press release on e-cigarettes in 2015, stressing that e-cigarettes were 95% less harmful than tobacco.
And this is quite reassuring for those who want to quit smoking through vaping.
